Concert of Madanji melodies in Mumbai on 30 Dec' 09
31 December 2009

Surtaal Sangam organized a memorable concert in memory of Madanji at the Ravindra Natya Mandir, Mumbai on 30 dec.

The concert was sold out a few days earlier and the organizers proudly claimed that this was the magic of Madanji's name and music.

Pankaj Udhas was the chief guest at the concert and spoke feelingly about Madanji's music and its influence on him and other ghazal singers.

The concert was also attended by Madanji's family, who lit the tradional lamp before the enthralling music began

An orchestra of 15 top musicians was ably conducted by Ajay Madan.

The highlight was the performance of the veteran saxophone legend , Manohari Singh. Manoharida played solo on his sax the two popular Madanji's melodies ,'Yun hasraton ke daag ' (Adalat), and 'Tu jahaan jahaan chalega' (Mera Saaya), to a standing ovation from the audience.

He later joined the singers in the interludes for 'Woh Bhooli Dastaan' (sanjog), and 'Shokh nazar ki bijliyan' (Woh Kaun Thi)

Singers Shailaja, Archana, Neelima, Shalini and Satish sang Madanji hits as well as rare songs with immense feeling and had the audience clamouring for more

Some of the songs performed included the hits 'Naina barse', Aapki nazron ne samjha' yeh duniya yeh mehfil, Tum jo mil gaye ho, Jhumka gira re, Nainon mein badra chaaye, baiyaan na dharo, Dil dhoondta hai, Tere liye, Lagja gale se, Hum pyaar mei jalnewalon ko, among others.

Also some lesser heard songs were performed, including 'Tere bin saawan', 'Khanak gayo', 'Jab jab tumhen bhulaya'' Baharein humko dhoondengi'

Indeed it was a memorable evening of sur and taal and the memorable melodies of Madan Mohan.
